Variety Show Baggy Trousers

As we wanted to do a big group piece we decided to do baggy trousers. This piece was alot of fun to be apart of. As in the actual show me and Fran play the same character, we split the Reecey dance parts. Overall, the piece went really well however, some people werent as confident with the piece so you can see people looking around to know what to do. During this performance, everyone really got into character and had great facial expressions. Personally, I wasnt as confidence on the choreography as I couldve been because I was use to rehearsing as Reecey so I hadnt rehearsed it as much being in the dance. There were also parts of the dance that had lower energy - the part when we're in the semi circle with different duets going on in the middle, the people round the edge start to loose energy.

Our House Rehearsal

Scenes in first show Act 2

The first scene I'm in for act 2 is Wings of a Dove. In the first show I was in the dance but in this show I'm Mr Pressman. I walk on from down stage left mid song and have short  conversation with Joe and tell him I need a developer in North London and give him my card and walk of upstage left.

This scene I walk on centre stage left to join Kath. I tell her how she's the last one on the street who hasn't sold her house to my company yet and we have a heated discussion that ends with her storming off. I then shout my last line after her and walk off upstage right taking no notice of Joe sitting there.

The next scene was the one I found the hardest to learn. I'm Mr Pressman and Joe sees me twice, one after the other. First he comes in as bad Joe. In this one I'm nice to him, ask him to help me with a problem I'm having. The problem turns out to be his mum. He agrees to help me and I tell him about Danny (Reecey) I tell him "He's our personal fireman". Before he leave I put my arm around him and tell him if he does this we'll be partners. As he goes to leave I ask him if theres any relation to him and 'Casey street', He says no and leaves. When he comes back into my office, he's now good Joe. Before he comes in, I'm on the phone with my wife making plans. Mr Pressman has no intrest in good Joe. When I call him in I call him 'Cosey' instead of Casey. Then mid conversation I start singing the reprise of 'My Girl' and talk about how my wife's mad at me. Joe ad libs underneath this and starts telling me I'm having a sing-song during a meeting. My last line of the song mentions me sleeping with my 19 year old receptionist. He calls me a dirty bugger the stands up and points at me. I shout at him, calling my security in. They drag Joe off while I call Danny to sort out Joes' Mums.

I then have a line with Joe during NW5. Joe walks on first and I follow. He tells me about how he wants to do a different project and I tell him to call Danny because there's nothing else for him to do. I then had the quickest change because I have the final chorus of NW5 to change and be ready to be a lawyer.

My next scene I was a lawyer. I picked up this role because someone got ill and no one else could do it. This is a reprise of Embarrassment. Me, Amber and Bryleah play middle level lawyers. We discussed that we wanted to add our own character and flare to them so we decided to be quite girly, stuck up and a little bit flirty. We turn our back on Joe then get closer to him when we're telling him to go to the legal aid place.

The next scene I'm in is the market scene. I walk on pushing a trolley for Joe to jump on as he starts singing the song. I push him across the stage to centre stage right. I take on Joes suit jacket and hung it on  a rack centre stage for when Joe changes behind the umbrellas. I then walk to my table with Luke and Bryleah. Each table has a different line to sing when we're selling. The first group go forward singing about incense; the second signs about offensive t-shirts. The next group sings about bath soaps. The last group is my group and we walk forward signing about cannabis. We then go back to our table and each group has a different way to travel to our positions. My trio went in cannon; Bryleah went first doing a walkover, then I done a cartwheel and look done a leap. We then done a short phrase Kat choreographed, while singing the chorus. After that we wander to different stalls to get umbrellas. We then get into three lines and do a short section with umbrellas that we took and adapted from the original production. The last part of the song we cover Joe with umbrellas while he changes in the suit jacket to be bad Joe. Once he's change we disperse and I take the good joe clothing off stage and everyone slowly brings off all the market stalls. We then wander round on stage singing the chorus. When there's a key change we've got to react to the house fire. I then go off stage.

The last scene I'm in is the finale. We mingle in the background until Sarah asks for a photograph. Me and Fran slide into the from and sit in front of Joe and Sarah on the floor while theyre standing. We all pull three different poses and the ligt flashes every time we change position. After Joes scene with Dad we all get up and start singing the Our House finale number. We dance around together until it gets to the counter melody of people singing our house and house of fun. We then get into two circles around Joe and Sarah and each circle runs in the opposite direction. This is meant to represent going back in time to Joes 16th birthday because Joe and Sarah change into their school uniform from the first scene. Everyone runs off stage and Joe and Sarah say their last lines and we finish the song from off stage. Everyone then comes back for bows.

Our House Rehearsal.

Scenes in second showAct 1

The first scene I'm in is the opening number of 'Our House'. In this scene I'm not playing Reecey or Mr Pressman, I'm just a normal person at a birthday party. When there's dialogue happening, we have to be in the background smiling, pretending to talk and mingling. The dance was meant to be quite casual but the movements still needed to be strong. Everyone had to keep their arms strong in the movements while singing. This is what everyone found the hardest. It took a few rehearsals for everyone to be able to do the choreography and sing loudly and in key. Kat choreographed the main phrase of the dance and the 'girl' motif we took from the original production. (Opening number Our House Dance ). After building the set, we decided to use it for people to stand on to make it look more interesting and use a range of levels - making the most of the spacing and staging.

Mr Pressman isn't in the first act a lot. My first scene as Mr Pressman I only have three lines. I walk on after Holly - playing my assistant Heather. She introduces me to bad Joe, and we shake hands. I walk off the same way I came on - Centre stage left.

This was the only scene I was in during the first act.

Our House Rehearsal

Scenes in first showAct 2

The first scene I'm in for act 2 is Wings of a Dove. In this scene I'm in a party and not playing a character. We had to be happy and look like we're having fun. This dance was a lot of fun to do but it took everyone a while to learn the song. The dance went really well but it was never fully perfected no matter how much we rehearsed it. However, the timing was really good and so was the characterisation of the dancers. They were energetic and happy.

My last proper scene as Reecey, is when Joe goes looking for Danny to break in to his house. In this scene I start off in the shadows because I'm meant to be quite mysterious and hidden. I then walk down to talk to Joe. We have a conversation about Joe asking me to break in to his house to get his mum to sell but I warn him how I've done this before but he still insists I do it. I walk past him and off centre stage left.

When there's a key change we've got to react to the house fire. I then go off stage.

After the funeral it goes into a court scene. I walk on and stand in the spotlight with Joe while the judge sentences us. Joe then starts to sing and we walk off backwards slowly and off stage. I then have to change into party clothes for the final wedding scene. I come back on to join people who are already on stage for the wedding party. Our House Rehersal

Scenes in first show
Act 1

The next scene I was in was as Reecey. This was the Camden Canal scene, which leads up to Baggy Trousers. In this scene, when Reecey appears he frightens of Emmo and Lewis. To make me look more intimidating we used the staging, they're laying on the floor and I'm on the second block so I'm looking down on them. I then jump off the blocks and walk diagonally to down stage left to join Joe. I put my arm around him and walk him across downstage to downstage right while talking. At the end of this scene I say a short paragraph to Joe about leaving school. I found it quite hard to learn this and say it without stuttering. However, by the dress run I had it down and learnt it. This scene then leads into Baggy Trousers. This number is my favourite and the most energetic and tiring dance. It took a lot of rehearsals for me to be able to sing and dance at the same time without getting out of breathe. During the dance theres not much for Joe and Reecey to do so we tried to run around and uhse all the staging. We climb to the top blocks and bully the teacher up the top. We stayed up on the blocks for most of the song, this was to show that we were in control of everyone. ( Baggy Trousers Our House Dance ).

I then go on during Emmo and Lewis' car wash scene. I walk on from the wing (centre stage left) and then I sit on the top block of staging pretending to be on the phone and listening to their conversation. I then walk down to centre stage, putting my arm around Joe and walking him down with me. After Joe gives me a speech about not going into crime with me, Amber walks on to start embarrassment. She gives a letter to Joe, and I snatch it off him and read it. After my lines in the song I pass it on to Billie and Angie. I then go off stage to get Joes suit jacket. I come back on, hang up the suit Jacket and stand at the back with the neighbours. When Lewis has finished his lines with letter I walk up and take it. We all sing one part of the song together, while in a square with Joe in the middle. We box step in, closing the square around him. This portrays we're all against him because were pointing at him, calling him an embarrassment and trapping him in this thought.

The next scene I had was a short one. In this scene I come on as Billie and Angie walk off after insulting and laughing at Joe. I come on centre stage left and walk to downstage centre with Joe. We talk about him not having money for Sarah's birthday. At the end of the scene Joe runs of after his last line. I then shout part of my line after him - "Y'want a car mate, I'm telling y'. Nothing impresses a woman like cars" - I then pause, turn to the audience and say "Well except honesty. An' personally I've always found cars easier". I then run up the steps of the seating and off.

My next scene is with good Joe. In the last scene as good Joe, he argues with Sarah so he's feeling down and will be easily persuaded to do the wrong thing.  I come on upstage right walking down to centre stage. In this scene I had to talk a bit softer and nicer because I'm trying to persuade Joe to join me and do the wrong thing. My lines in this scene are in between Joe's Dads' song lines. I tell Joe if he does this he'd be able to buy Sarah something nice for her birthday and pay for a party. Joe agrees and I put my arm around him and we walk off centre stage left.

This is my last scene in act 1. It's also my last song as Reecey. During the ball with bad Joe and Sarah, I run on with the good Joe double, both of us carrying a TV box together. This leads on from my previous scene with Joe. We run across the stage, up the steps of the seating and down the side steps. As there isn't very long for this I start singing before I'm in my spotlight. This worked quite well because I'm singing I didn't do it while a policeman is dragging and pulling me across stage to the spotlight. The morning of the show, Fran had the idea to make the police mugshot signs to hold during, so Fran and I made them during the day to use in the evening show. She got this idea from the actual production because in that when the policemen do the count down its their picture is being taken. After the song is done, I get taken off by the policeman.

Our House Dance

Baggy Trousers
The piece is a development from what my group created previously (Baggy Trousers first group choreography). Me and megan choreographed the duets using different fighting movements, like slapping, kicking and dodging. We also pulled some movement from the actual production like the ending, walking movements and some motifs. With practice and refinement the piece should turn out well.

The first time we done this dance with the other class added in it was really low energy. And where we'd only been practicing that lesson they still weren't sure on what to do so it was very messy. Me and Megan choreographed the duets with Kat and watched the actual production and used different movements and incorporated them into our duets. The bit where we pull Raven in the middle and snake through peoples arms is taken from the actual show.
After a lot of practice singing and dancing the piece turned out really well. During rehearsals we realised the dance is very tiring so we need to start ding it while signing to get use to it. We practiced just the singing with Kim and realised we're meant to be rowdy school kids so she told everyone to not sing too nicely and make it louder like school kids. However, the spacing of the duets could've been better because there was three down the middle and one on the right and everyone else was on the left so it looked a bit clumped.

Wings of a Dove

During one of our dance lessons, we spent one hour exploring different movement for wings of a dove. We watched different versions of the show and saw different movements and formations in other versions that we could use. Kat then gave us 10 minutes to get into groups and try and choreograph a short phrase. Kat filmed this time.
This was my groups piece. We all contributed to choreographing this and had a lot of fun exploring different movements and different ideas. Our first movement was used in the dance with people using different levels and going one up, one down. The video below is Megan's group who actually choreographed the main phrase we used in the final choreography. We used their ideas and developed them further to fit the larger number of dancers in the actual piece.

This was the actual dance in the show. The dance went really well but it was never fully perfected no matter how much we rehearsed it. During the circle part where we do opposite arms up and down I was unsure. It took me and everyone else a few seconds to figure out when arms needed to be up or down. I had to look around the circle to see what the order was. However, the timing was really good and so was the characterisation of the dancers. They were energetic and happy which was really good because we we're meant to be at a Vegas wedding enjoying ourselves.

Our House

Our house was really strong and energetic. The staging needed abit more work as everyone was mainly upstage so we didn't use the space as well as we could. Kat taught us the main phrase. The choreography matched the piece, was simplistic. During the quartet motif, I was confident in what I was doing and didn't have to look around and my movements were strong. During the duets as well, I knew what I was doing and my movement was strong. I liked working on my duet with Vicki and we created this duet using movement from the actual production. However, when it gets to the counter melody, not everyone was very confident in the movement so not everyone joined in at the same time.

Our House Show

18th May

Call for this one was at 11:00 because Kim wanted to give some notes and run a few scenes and songs before the 16:30 show. We went through my Pressman scene and song. We also ran baggy trousers and wings of a dove.

16:30
This had a bigger crowd then yesterdays 16:30 show but still wasn't big enough for a reaction. As I was playing Mr Pressman I only had about two scenes in the first act so I helped everyone backstage. I had more scenes in the second half and the quickest costume change. As one person couldn't make the show I took their part. Yesterday it was easy as I had a massive gap to change in but in this show the scene was straight after a Pressman scene. In this show I was very prepared so I ended up coming out half in costume. To avoid this happening in the 19:30 show I will wear my costume to be a lawyer underneath my Pressman suit.

19:30
The audience wasn't as big as yesterdays but the show was good. My idea to wear my costume underneath worked out really well and I made it on stage on time in correct costume. It was weird doing baggy trousers and being in the ensemble but it was a lot of fun. Personally I think there was more energy in yesterdays show than this one. When I was signing my girl I found it hard to stay in character because Nathan was ad libing underneath and it was really funny and making everyone laugh.
