As Level Dance Solo progression

For our solo choreographies, we were given three questions to choose from;

  • Choreograph and perform a dance based on a consideration and exploration of one or more of The Air Series of Sculptures created by Daniel Wurtzel (born 1963).
  • Choreograph and perform a dance based on an exploration of one or more of the four temperaments linked to personality.
  • Choreograph and perform a dance based on an exploration of one or more forms of pollution which exist in the 21st century.
For my solo, I've chosen to research the four temperaments. The four temperaments are; melancholic, choleric, phlegmatic, and sanguine.

Melancholic

Melancholic people are emotionally sensitive, perfectionist introverts. They are respectful to authority, follow rules and feel comfortable in hierarchies, where structure, rules and order are implemented. It is important for them to feel themselves a part of the larger community. They see their loyalty to it as a duty. Melancholic personality traits are associated with serotonin, which suppresses aggressive tendencies. This explains why melancholic people are calm and self-confident, deeply attached to their family and community and loyal. They love routines, which they find relaxing, and any repetitive motion increases serotonin levels. Melancholics have a very sensitive emotional nature; feelings dominate their being. Sometimes moods will lift them to extreme highs; at other times they will be gloomy and depressed.

Choleric

These people are direct, focused, tough, analytical, logical and strategic. They have a great deal of courage and like to compete, often against each other. They often have square jaws, high cheekbones and high foreheads and love to use words like “intellect”, “ambition” and “challenge”. Choleric's are extroverted in the sense that they will meddle in others' affairs and 'speak their mind' if they feel it is necessary, rather than minding their own business. They generally believe that they are right, and have immense stubbornness about admitting their flaws, unless admitting these flaws would make them look better than others. They demand respect from others, and will hold grudges against those that they consider to be rivals.

So far, I've choreographed a melancholic section of my dance. I repeat one motif to help represent the melancholic temperament as they like routine and repetitive motion. (18th January 2017).
